Tropical Spectacle: Carmen Miranda Still Life
Tropical Spectacle is a still life project inspired by Carmen Miranda, exploring fashion as performance through exaggeration, maximalism, and constructed identity. The concept is based on her role as a cultural figure who shaped the representation of Brazilian and Latin identity through bold styling, theatrical presentation, and visual impact within early Technicolor cinema.
Her image was defined through styling choices that prioritized visibility, impact, and character. This project draws from that approach, treating styling as a primary tool for communication, where proportion, color, and layering are used to build a strong visual identity rather than reflect realism.

The project translates her signature aesthetic into a contemporary still life using styling and object selection as the primary tools of communication. Key elements include Isolda Cajueiro Phebo perfume, representing energy, heat, and Brazilian identity; MAC red lipstick, referencing her signature look; the Balenciaga Le Cagole Mini, expressing exaggeration and statement dressing; Swarovski Gema jewelry, introducing sparkle and movement; the Jonathan Adler Eye Trinket Tray, reinforcing maximalist expression; and Louis Vuitton silk scarf, adding color, layering, and references to her iconic head wraps.
Tropical flowers and fruits such as dragon fruit, orange, pineapple, and banana are incorporated as central styling elements, referencing her iconic fruit-adorned head wraps while reinforcing themes of color, abundance, and spectacle.
